Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease was first identified in 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, China, and has since spread globally, resulting in the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.
The virus is highly contagious and usually spread as a result of coughing, sneezing, cross infection. Respiratory droplets are also produced during breathing but are not considered airborne. The virus will also spread when one touches a contaminated surface and then the face, mouth, eyes and of course other people. This specific virus family can survive on surfaces and objects for months.
As there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19 and it is known that a development of a vaccine and or medication for the specific virus, will not prevent the evolution of other harmful and even more aggressive viruses, it is imperative to focus on maintaining a healthy indoor environment and making sure that surfaces in our indoors are clear of pathogens.
